ROCK CLIMBING AND BOULDERING

Rock climbing and bouldering are among the better-kept secrets of the Buena Vista / Chaffee County area. The Four Mile Traffic Management Area alone offers more quality rock than many better-known climbing destinations, with some multi-pitch routes authored by Colorado climbing legend Harvey Carter.

Climbing around Buena Vista and throughout Northern Chaffee County is experiencing a renaissance. The American Safe Climbing Association (ASCA - - www.safeclimbing.org) is sponsoring a major bolt upgrade project, replacing old bolts, hangers, and anchors with new camouflage gear. Tom Perkins, author of The Independence Pass Rock Climbing Guide, is writing a new guide for rock climbing in and around Buena Vista. The book is due for release in early 2005.
